Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, on an augmented pale Sanguine fimbriated Or in chief a mullet and in base a gopher (S. tridecemlineatus) sejant both of the last (Or).  Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "POUR LA PATRIE" in Blue letters.

Symbolism
The basic color of the shield is blue for Infantry.  The pale is maroon edged gold the State colors and on this is charged "L'Etoile du Nord" and the gopher emblem of the State of Minnesota.  The motto translates to "For Native Land."

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 9 December 1925.  It was rescinded on 2 October 1958.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Minnesota Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Azure, a sheaf of wheat Proper.
